Hedge End Golf Centre, Southampton

New Super Range takes shape

GRN takes a look at the building of Southampton’s new super range.

Sites do not get much better than Hedge End. Hundreds of thousands of people living within 15 minutes, thousands of cars passing each hour on the busy M27, with excellent access within a few hundred yards of a motorway junction and a major shopping centre. Ted Awcock of Artington Golf is developing the site, which will open in the spring of 2004. Ted has been a golf course constructor for 30 years and is now developing his own range with his family.

The two tier range structure will begin construction in September and will include a large retail shop, corporate entertaining facilities, bar and restaurant. The site had considerable planning issues to overcome and was nearly a large cinema complex.

Ted explains:

“There was a lot of interest in the site from all sorts of developers and we are delighted to have secured a twenty-five year lease. The site is fantastic and we will run the range “hands on” with our Artington Golf office on site. It allows us a wonderful opportunity to show case Artington’s various skills. We are building eleven greens on the range surface, which are to golf course standard, including sculptured, carefully graded surrounds. ‘Wall to wall’ irrigation will allow us to keep the range surface in tip-top condition throughout the year. I have often thought how disappointing range outfields are - now we have the chance to show how it should be done.”

GRN will be back to visit this fascinating project several times over the coming months.
