OGRO First Aniversary

Yes, it really is a year since OGRO was launched in September 2002, and what an eventful year it has been.

Having met a lot of new contacts within the golf and golf range industry at SALTEX, GRN and OGRO were off to Marbella for Premiere Golf 2002 where we made a lot of new friends and met many OGRO members. January was marked by two major events in OGRO’s short life with John Jacobs OBE installed as Honorary President of OGRO and our first conference for the UK range industry.

Unfortunately, John was taken ill and unable to attend the presentation and lunch at the Marriott Meon Valley Golf and Country Club. Peter Alliss stood in for John and accepted the commemorative plaque and decanter from John Stirling on his behalf. The many messages of congratulation received from so many great names in golf stand as a real tribute to how highly regarded John is internationally. It is regretable that John’s contribution to golf around the world has not been more appropriately recognised in this country. OGRO's first conference for the UK range industry was held in Harrogate later the same month during the Clubhouse/BTME show and was a ‘sell-out’. The stars of the show were, of course, the speakers who did a wonderful job of being both informative and entertaining, earning the conference an unqualified success rating from all who attended.

For those of you who attended Harrogate and asked what we could do for a follow-up, the draft conference schedule for Marbella is available on the OGRO website at The final schedule will be published next month. I think that we have managed to put together an exciting range of knowledgeable speakers covering a number of relevant topics for the golf range industry. With a venue that is slightly more hospitable than Harrogate in January, and running in partnership with Premiere Golf 2003, Marbella is defiantly the place to be in November. I look forward to renewing acquaintances and meeting many more OGRO members.

The page opposite illustrates how successful OGRO has been in forming partnerships with major companies that offer added value for OGRO members. These special prices are available to all UK range owners and operators. It has been a great year and a wonderful opportunity to be in at the start of something that many of you tell me has made a real contribution to developing an industry identity for the golf range business.

We look forward to seeing you in Marbella.
